Our Communities are in Crisis!
The Atlanta region is experiencing growing disparities between the
"haves" and the "have-nots." These disparities are most pronounced
between the central city and the suburbs, and these urban-suburban
disparities have a racial dimension.
The metropolitan area's drift toward racial/economic segmentation is
most pronounced in public education. The gap between urban and
suburban schools is widening.
The children in the Atlanta Public Schools ("APS") are
overwhelmingly black, and the work of these schools is especially
challenging because of three critical community deficits:
A lack of enrichment opportunities for
APS students;
Lagging performance in math and science; and
A lack of role models for young African American men.
Kappa Boule's golf tournament benefits two highly-acclaimed
initiatives designed to address these deficits.
Succeed with CREED
Succeed with CREED is a youth development and enrichment program
focused on young men in three middle schools, half of them
identified as "promising," and half of them identified as "at risk."

Each month during the Spring Semester, Kappa Boule presents a
program designed to inspire participants and to awaken in them a
sense of higher and broader possibilities.
Each program begins with a meal and small-group discussion, followed
by an educational program, followed by an enrichment activity.
The educational programs include orientation regarding the day's
enrichment activity, life lessons from members of Kappa Boule, and
motivational presentations focused on the program's key values:
Commitment
Responsibility
Education
Excellence

Chess Program
Many educators believe that chess programs enhance students'
cognitive skills, math and science skills, and the social skills
that can contribute to an enhanced sense of self-esteem.
In the early years of Kappa Boule's program, Kappa Boule trained
students from Morehouse and Spelman colleges, and these collegians
earned community service credits by serving as coaches/mentors in
three elementary schools.
Kappa Boule provided the necessary equipment and supplies to the
schools, and students were not charged a fee to participate. After experiencing the program, participating students achieved
significant academic success. In one year, sixteen of the
twenty-one chess club participants at Herndon Elementary School were
recognized for earning straight A's or maintaining honor roll
status.
In 2010, Kappa Boule became the lead sponsor for the Atlanta Public
Schools City-wide Interscholastic Chess League.
